Fairy Tales

Over the holidays I watched Disney's Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. The message in both that I got was: Fairies, no matter how well-intentioned, are disempowering and princes are pretty much useless.

In the Brother's Grimm versions Cinderella/Ashenputtel made her own magic with her great virtue. And Sleeping Beauty/Aurora/The Princess was a passive airhead and the prince didn't have to fight his way to her because he just happened to show up at the right time when the spell broke and the briar hedge receded on its own. In this case, I have to say I liked the Disney version better. Excellent evil fairy/dragon! But let's face it, the female fairies were the real heroes.

Have you seen the Czech movie version of Cinderella, the 1973 Tři oříšky pro Popelku?

No, haven't seen it. It is available with subtitles?

I think it is, yes. Amazon UK has it, and the comments/customer reviews suggest it has Czech audio and English subtitles - no guarantee, however, as there is no product information saying one way or the other. German Amazon has it, too, but doesn't mention anything about English subtitles (but you can get either German or Schwizerdütsch audio).

On YouTube, the only English versions (not sure if they're dubbed, narrated or subtitled) are split in 3-10 minute pennypackets; they're titled either Thee Gifts for Cinderella or Three Wishes for Cinderella.

I love Maleficent and can't wait for the movie to come out!

There's a Malificent movie!? I'm in. She's awesome in her unapologetic awfulness. And she has great style.

Angelina Jolie is beautiful as Maleficent

I adore Sleeping Beauty. It's probably the only Disney cartoon I like now that I'm an adult. And it's all because of Maleficent. (though the good fairies kicked ass too)

There's a semi-consensus that Maleficent is the ultimate Disney villain, an honor that earned her the position of leader in the Disney Villain franchise. She's certainly MY favorite villain. :)

... yet another movie I didn't see in AGES.
Excuse my random babbling, but did you know that Disney movies are freaking amazing when you try to learn English? They're usually my recommendation when colleagues talk about their kids having difficulties learning English. I live in a german-speaking country and the German translations of Disney movies keep very close to the original. Even the songs.

Have you ever read Spindle's End by Robin McKinley? It's a take on Sleeping Beauty that really empowers the princess, without denying the help she gets from various other people (the fairies, the royal family). It's by far my favorite take on the story.
