Movie Option Expires

Bad news, folks. Despite the best of efforts, C-Squared was unable to find backing for a Nightrunner project. I am, of course, disappointed, but this is a common outcome for these things. That doesn't mean there may not be another try in the future, but for now, Alec and Seregil remain on the page.

Bah. :( This makes me sad, though it also means the boys get to live in my imagination instead of being dictated by film.

Hm... not quite sure whether to be happy or sad.

As I realized with other movie adaptions (LoTR, for example), I prefer the movies in my own head to the ones that are actually produced for the big screen... Then again, it *would* have been nice to see Alec and Seregil in "real life". Sort of...

Oh well... you never know whether the *next* try won't end up being *much* better in execution than the first one... ^^

I'm curious to know, for future reference, what exactly is involving in optioning a piece of fiction for film purposes?
Nov. 4th, 2010 04:17 pm (UTC)
Short answer: you go to the author's agent and she brokers the deal. ;-)

There are option fees and contracts for x amount of time. An option gives a producer or screenwriter or whatever a limited exclusive option to come up with a script and find backing.

Interesting. Hope you don't mind if I pass the info on to a person of possible interest - or his agent, to be precise. No guarantees, of course. I would love to see Alec and Seregil brought to life.
Nov. 4th, 2010 04:24 pm (UTC)
Please do! Thanks. :-)

I passed the info along, with a link to the Nightrunner page on Wikipedia. It would be quite awesome if this person turned out to be interested, he'd do a great job of it.

Did they look into getting funded through Kickstarter?

Nov. 4th, 2010 04:25 pm (UTC)
Awwww. I second the anime. That would be cool too.

Awww, too bad. Hopefully soon!

Speaking of a Nightrunner film - I'm not sure if you've seen the BBC's updated version of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock (2010), which just aired as part of PBS's Masterpiece Mystery series in the US? It struck me that the actor playing Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, might make a good Seregil *points to icon*. Though I guess he may be a bit too tall and lanky. For more pics, I can recommend cumberbatchfans. :)

I LOVE the new Sherlock series! I had reservations on the updating, but they did a brilliant job of capturing the characters. I really like Watson in this version, who often gets short shrift. i thought the same aobut Benedict. Lanky is good and height can be dealt with in film magic.

Heee, isn't it great?! I hadn't heard of it, but then happened to zap into the press conference scene of the first episode on the BBC. Rupert Graves caught my eye, so I kept watching. I'm SO glad that I did! I agree, Watson is fabulous (let alone Sherlock, oh my), and the chemistry between Martin and Benedict is perfect. If only the wait for the second season wasn't so long!

That incomprehensible keysmash translates roughly as: "I JUST FINISHED WATCHING SHERLOCK AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND I MAY HAVE TO STEAL THE CRAP OUT OF THAT ICON IF YOU DON'T MIND." Roughly. I reached the end of the series while on a bus back to where I go to school and reacted with quite audible horror when it ended. I'm sure the other bus people were a little alarmed.

I actually had the exact same thought about Benedict Cumberbatch, especially because of his eyes, his eyes are the eyes the Seregil in my mind has. 0.o

Oh I know - I was SCREAMING at the TV when ep 3 ended. Good thing there was no one else around, hee hee. And steal away - that's actually one of my own. I have a few more simple ones here, but I can recommend sherlockbbc if you are interested in icons/wallpapers/art/fic/etc.

Glad to hear it's not just me who thought that about Benedict! :D

I really, REALLY wanted to scream more, but people were already staring a bit because I was flailing, so I just sort of curled up in a ball for the last five minutes of the trip and then pretty much attacked my friend when he came to pick me up from the bus depot. He is a hardcore fanboy of a few things, so he was understanding of my spluttering spoiler-free ranting and distress despite having not seen the series (yet).

Yay! Thanks! Ooh, and I appreciate the links. I'm an icon/wallpaper/art/fic addict, so this is fantastic!
Nov. 5th, 2010 06:37 pm (UTC)
I'm stealing this one. I've only seen the first two, but this is one of the greatest lines ever.
Nov. 4th, 2010 07:05 pm (UTC)
Tough luck, but that's showbiz! One of my friends is going into film as her major, so maybe in a few years when she graduates and has some connections there'll be an option again!

And somewhat off-topic, but your panel at Yaoicon was amazing, thank you so much for coming and reading to us! It was one of the highlights of my weekend. ♥
Nov. 4th, 2010 07:17 pm (UTC)
I totally enjoyed Yaoi Con and you folks were a terrific audience! Wish we hadn't run out of books. I had no idea so many people would show up!
Nov. 4th, 2010 07:33 pm (UTC)
Wow, you ran out? I'm so glad I managed to get one! Haven't had a chance to read it because of schoolwork, but looking forward to cracking it open this weekend.
Nov. 4th, 2010 08:44 pm (UTC)
Ah man. ;_; I was really hoping it would happen too. Well, at least we still will always have them in the books, and you never know what the future might hold! =)
Nov. 4th, 2010 09:28 pm (UTC)
Man, that is the most depressing thing I've read for weeks. =| Sorry about it. But at least you can keep writing! And the future is full of opportunities, right? I'll keep my fingers crossed for better luck in the future.
Nov. 4th, 2010 10:55 pm (UTC)
D: D: D: sadface, i was so looking forward to it! hopefully one day in the future?
Nov. 5th, 2010 01:19 am (UTC)
Sadness. But, well, maybe the time wasn't right. Meanwhile we still have Casket of Souls to look forward to!

Speaking of actors/Seregil, I'm just gonna throw this out there: Matt Bomer.

Any thoughts?
Nov. 5th, 2010 01:29 am (UTC)
Seregil or, with a bit of scruff, Thero.
Nov. 5th, 2010 10:51 am (UTC)
I'm so disappointed it didn't work! I was so looking forward to this.
But I'm quite sure it will happen one day or another *fingers crossed*

As for actors, did you watch BBC's Being Human? I thought Aidan Turner who plays Mitchell the vampire looks so much like Seregil on the Shadows Return cover.

With a shaven face, longer hair and grey lenses?
Now, Seregil has Turner's face and voice when I'm reading him. He even has his Irish accent ;-)

More Aidan Turner photos (don't mind the AidEn Turner pictures though. There can't seem to be one without the other)
Nov. 5th, 2010 06:11 am (UTC)
Urgh, not good news. At least they gave it a try, though, which might make others interested in such a project. And hey, future books will still happen, which is good. ♥
Nov. 5th, 2010 06:43 am (UTC)
Aww, that is really too bad. I was quite looking forward to seeing Alec and Seregil brought to life! If things haven't changed by the time I'm out of film school, I might just have to see what I can do to make this happen.
Nov. 5th, 2010 01:15 pm (UTC)
As sad as it may be that they will not make it to the big screen this time, I have to admit to some relief that the vivid descriptions that have filled my head as I read the books will be the images forever remembered. Casting just never seems to fully portray a well written character.
Nov. 5th, 2010 09:10 pm (UTC)
Awww, sad news
I was so excited to see these stories on film and have these amazing characters reach a wider audience. It's got to happen eventually. Though I also agree with some other comments, it is a bit of a relief. Between the books and my imagination everything is so perfect. I'm leery of a film because it cements the images and people and places may not look like what I picture. Anyway, I'll still keep my fingers crossed for the future.
Nov. 5th, 2010 09:13 pm (UTC)
I still vote for James McAvoy to play Seregil.
Nov. 6th, 2010 11:08 am (UTC)
Nightrunner manga series?
Oh no! I was just wondering what ever happened to the project and now i'm completely depressed!

Although I was thinking...

I live in Japan right now and I just bought the Japanese versions of your books and was marveling at the manga style artwork in them when it hit me. Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a Nightrunner Manga? And from there possibly an anime? The Japanese do love to turn their manga's into Animes...to bad I have no connections making this just a thought to through out there for someone who might know the right people. Just saying.
Nov. 10th, 2010 10:53 pm (UTC)
That's kinda sad, but I'll keep on believing it'll happen.

The books are beyong awesome, and would translate well into a movie in my opinion.
I'm sure it'll be made into a movie eventually. :D
Nov. 21st, 2010 04:19 pm (UTC)
Oh god!!! I was sooooo looking forward it!!!! God!!! I can't believe this!!! If I was rich I would definitely sponsor this movie! T_T I really love this series.... T_T such a pity
