From the NY Times:

California Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban

In striking down the ban, the court said, "In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual's sexual orientation -- like a person's race or gender -- does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights."

Good stuff :D! Too bad criminal law isnt in federal jurisdiction in the states, cause its going to be a long time till the rest of the states clue in.

Yep. As a now-tranplanted native Californian, I'm proud, too. What I especially like is the direct link to the California Supreme Court decision in 1948 that the ban on interracial marriages was unconstitutional. I just hope it sticks.

That's got to be one of the nicest-put statements on the news lately. :)

I heard that on the radio. I'm glad that a Czech radio in the middle of Europe gives information about the other part of the world.
Is it real marriage? In the Czech Republic it's just "registered partnership" between two people of the same sex...

I knew there was a reason I wanted to move so badly to California. :)

Very well-worded argument.

Too bad I live in the South. There's very little chance of anything like that being passed here for a long, long time.

Real marriage, woo! My girlfriend and I get to be married for real in July, none of that 'civil union' crap. We've been dancing and singing since yesterday morning.

Also, note to the Supreme Court: No take-backs!

Even though this decision has no legal inpact on me since I am not an American, it really brightened my day and made me smile regardless of a shitty week. I would be proud too:-)

I was delighted to hear this, and sad that I suspect AZ will take a long time to follow suit.
